Nurturing Future Poultry Farmers: FAO Rwanda Empowers Youth in Nyaruguru and Ruhango

In a recent collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Rwanda announced a $378,000 investment to empower 41 youth in Nyaruguru and Ruhango Districts to become successful poultry farmers.

The project provides comprehensive support, equipping young individuals with the resources they need to thrive. This includes:

Modern Poultry Farms: Four groups will receive houses capable of accommodating 700 chickens each, kickstarting their poultry farming ventures.

Enhanced Productivity: 2,000 laying hens and an additional 7,000 chickens will be distributed to 200 youth and women poultry producers, boosting their flock size and potential output.

Holistic Support: The initiative goes beyond infrastructure and livestock. It provides chicken feed for two months after egg laying commences, ensuring the birds' well-being and early production.

Veterinary Support: Dedicated veterinary services will ensure the health and proper management of the poultry, minimizing potential losses and maximizing productivity.

Empowering Tools: Each beneficiary will receive a bicycle to facilitate farm operations and a smartphone to connect them to vital information, markets, and potential buyers.

Knowledge is Power: Training in production techniques, farm management, and market access will equip young farmers with the necessary skills to navigate the poultry business landscape successfully.

Long-Term Sustainability: The project includes two years of monitoring, providing ongoing support and ensuring the long-term success of the young entrepreneurs.

This project by FAO Rwanda and MINAGRI is a powerful example of how targeted interventions can empower young people and contribute to Rwanda's agricultural development. By providing the necessary resources, knowledge, and support, this initiative paves the way for a future generation of skilled and successful poultry farmers, contributing to food security, job creation, and economic growth in Nyaruguru and Ruhango districts.
